Weaving

This book contains some of my favourite poems about weaving. The verses of the poem written on the wider strips are interspersed with narrower sections each with an individual quote. One verse of the poem mentions gold and silver threads, so I featured this on the cover. Also the two colours of the concertina-folded strips are “woven” together with gold and silver threads.
I wrote WEAVING on the cover in pearlescent acrylics. The lettering inside the book was handwritten then photocopied onto parchment card.

The Web of Life

This booklet contains quotes about co-dependence in the natural world, the inter-connections between man and his environment, and the importance of preserving the balance of nature for future generations. The book is a variation of a “maze book” in which the paper was cut and then re-connected to form a meandering message about the “Web of Life”.

This treasure-chest box holds seven small booklets. Each booklet contains information about a particular gemstone, and those gems are sewn along the spine of the booklet. When the box is opened, the gemstone-spines of the booklets form a rainbow of colour.

Number Patterns

This concertina/star book, entitled “10 – COUNTING BACK: the past nine years unfold”, depicts the numbers from nine to one. The cover of the book features an unfolding blossom with progressively decreasing numbers of petals.
One side of each inside page shows each numeral repeated as a multiple of itself to create a circular pattern. On the other side, each number has been written (in words) as a plane shape with the requisite number of sides.

Each page of this book describes the historical development of one letter of our alphabet, from its earliest pictorial representation to its modern symbolic form. Each page is also decorated with a symmetrical design based on that letter, created by mirroring and repeating the letter to produce a circular pattern.

Typography

This book outlines the history of typography. The metal character tied to the front of this book is a brass mould, made in England a hundred years ago, for use in a lead linecasting machine made by Ludlow. This particular Ludlow machine was in use at the Fleet Printery in Brisbane in the early 20th century.

Christmas ABC

This concertina book is created from a single sheet of paper. One side lists Christmas words starting with each letter of the alphabet. The other side of each section has the words of a Christmas carol or seasonal song with that letter in the title or first line (I had to make up a verse for the letter Q!). There are also stamped and punched Christmas images throughout.
