Making Artist Books (folded styles)
I teach many different techniques for making your own folded books.
These are great for writing your travel memories, displaying your photos, recording your thoughts, poetry or recipes, etc.
A class in Folded Books is currently scheduled for later this year (see below).

These classes are for complete beginners as well as those who want to learn new techniques.
During each class you will make lots of samples and have the chance to examine many different variations of these techniques.
Comprehensive notes are included so you can make more at home.
FOLDED BOOKS (4-6 hours)
This comprehensive class combines three popular and versatile techniques – single-sheet books, concertinas and origami books (as described in more detail below). We also explore some of the many variations of these (pop-ups, gate folds, flag books, tunnel books, pocketed concertinas, star books, etc).
This 4-6 hour class can be structured as one longer session or several shorter sessions.
This class will be taught at Tarragindi in 2024.

MORE FOLDED BOOKS (4-6 hours)
This class is especially suited to those who enjoyed Tricia’s Folded Books (see above). We will explore some of the less well-known, more unusual folds, including piano-hinge, slot-and-tab books, interlocking slotted books, folded pocket books and fishbone folds (as described in more detail below). You'll be able to see examples of some of the many variations of these.
This 4-6 hour class can be structured as one longer session or several shorter sessions.
CONCERTINA BOOKS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be shown many different techniques for making your own books based on the accordion fold. As well as basic concertinas, you will use this versatile technique to make samples of flag books, tunnel books, star books, pocketed concertinas and double concertinas. |

SINGLE SHEET BOOKS (2-3 hours)
|
In this class you will be shown many different techniques for making your own books, all using just a single sheet of paper, but yet looking intricate and unique. |

ORIGAMI BOOKS (2-3 hours)
|
In this class you will be shown many different techniques for making your own books based on origami folds. You will learn at least three different folding patterns, and be shown how to assemble them in several different ways to make your own unique books. |

PIANO HINGE BOOKS (2-3 hours)
In this class you will be shown techniques for creating “piano hinge” books in which the pages are linked by threading skewers through alternating pockets. This versatile technique is popular for travel journals because you can continually add more pages and mementos at a later date.
You will be able to examine finished examples of books made using this technique and be inspired by the many variations and possibilities.
SLOTTED BOOKS (2-4 hours)

In this class you will be shown several different techniques for making your own books and 3D sculptures by interlocking slotted pieces of card. These include slotted concertinas and slot-and-tab books. You will be able to examine lots of finished examples of books made using these techniques and be inspired by the many variations and possibilities. |

DOUBLE CONCERTINAS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be shown several different techniques for making double concertina books in which the two concertina layers are joined by tabs. You will be able to examine finished books made using these techniques and be inspired by the many variations and possibilities. |

BOOKS WITH FOLDED COVERS (2-3 hours)
|
Make some fascinating books with folded pockets on the cover (in which a book can be stitched inside later). You will make three different varieties which have pockets for adding souvenirs, photos and collage items. |

FISHBONE FOLD BOOKS (2 hours)
|
In this class you will be shown an interesting book structure which (when closed and viewed from above) resembles a backbone with ribs. When it is opened out, the text and images on the pages become visible. |

STAR (CAROUSEL) BOOKS (2-3 hours)
|
In this class you will be able to explore several different ways to make books which open up into a 3D circular shape. |
