Making Artist Books (stitched styles)

I can show you how to make books using various methods of stitching.

These make excellent gifts, as well as being very useful for all sorts of projects for yourself. 


 A class in Stitched Books is currently scheduled for later this year (see below).

For other classes, contact Tricia to organise a class time and venue, or to add your name to a waiting list.

These classes are for complete beginners as well as those who want to learn new techniques.

During each class you will make lots of samples and have the chance to examine many different variations of these techniques. 

Comprehensive notes are included so you can make more at home.

STITCHED BOOKS (4-6 hours)

In this class you will be shown many different techniques for making your own stitched books – pamphlet stitching, figure 8 knotted books, exposed bindings, stab-bindings and more (as described in more detail below). You will be shown lots of different variations of these techniques and make samples of those that appeal to you.
This 4-6 hour class can be structured as one longer session or several shorter sessions.

This class will be taught at Tarragindi in 2024.

MORE STITCHED BOOKS (4-6 hours)

This comprehensive class combines several more labour-intensive techniques – stitching multiple pamphlets, coptic binding and buttonhole binding (as described in more detail below). We also explore some of the many variations of these.
This 4-6 hour class can be structured as one longer session or several shorter sessions.

 

PAMPHLET STITCHED BOOKS & FIGURE 8 KNOTTED BOOKS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will learn the versatile technique of pamphlet stitching, as well as the useful figure-8 method of knotting pages together. Both these techniques are very adaptable, and can be used to make book in many different materials (fabric, plastic, wood, etc) as well as paper and card.
You will be able to examine lots of finished examples of books, and be inspired by the many variations and possibilities.

               

 

TIED & STAB-BOUND BOOKS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will learn techniques for making books using tying and exposed stitched bindings.
You will make samples of traditional Japanese stab binding, and also modern variations of these, as well as other tied bindings. You will be able to examine lots of finished examples of books, and be inspired by the many variations and possibilities.

BUTTONHOLE STITCH BOOKS  (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be shown how to make a Buttonhole Stitch Book, in which the folded pages are attached to the cover using long looped stitches. These make great travel journals because you can continually add more pages and mementos. 
You will be able to examine finished examples of these books, and be inspired by the variations and possibilities.

MULTIPLE-SECTION PAMPHLET STITCHED BOOKS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be shown several methods for making books by stitching together several folded sections. You will also be able to try various ways of adding decorative stitching on the spine.
You will be able to examine finished examples of these books, and be inspired by the variations and possibilities.

STITCHED DOUBLE CONCERTINAS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be shown several different techniques for making double concertina books in which the two concertina layers are joined by stitching.
You will be able to examine finished books made using these techniques and be inspired by the many variations and possibilities.

COPTIC BINDING (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be shown how to make a Coptic bound book, in which the folded sections are joined with decorative chain stitches on the spine.
You will be able to examine finished examples of these books, and be inspired by the variations and possibilities.

BOOKS WITH HARD COVERS (2-3 hours)

In this class you will be able to make hard covers for your books. This is particularly suitable for stab-bound books, coptic bound books, buttonhole book or multiple-section pamphlet stitching.
You will be able to examine finished examples of these books, and be inspired by the variations and possibilities.

STAR (CAROUSEL) BOOKS (2-3 hours)

n this class you will be able to explore several different ways to make books which open up into a 3D circular shape.
You will be able to examine finished examples of these books, and be inspired by the variations and possibilities.
